IC INFORMATION;
Characters Name: Kenma Kozume
Age: 16 **(17 in game)
Canon: Haikyuu!!
Canon Point: Post-Training Camp
Species: Human
Gender: M/M
Orientation: Kenma hasn't shown any indication of his sexual orientation in canon but because of his personality I'd like to say that he doesn't particularly care about the sex or gender of the person he'd be with.
History: His Wikia page. There isn't much to Kenma's history that we know of, though that's most likely due to the fact that only small parts of it are note-worthy to his character. What we're told is that since Kenma was young he'd never been able to make friends easily because of his very reserved personality, as such he'd never liked interacting with people much and mostly did things on his own. His only friend had been his neighbour, Kuroo, who is still the person he's closest to presently, he started playing volleyball at a young age, and only joined school teams because of Kuroo. Even though he doesn't particularly like volleyball he has remained part of the team for the sake of the other members who are almost all of the few friends that Kenma has.
Appearance: Pudding Head **(in game his hair is shoulder length, regularly tied back in a ponytail)
Personality: Kenma is characterized by a deliberate lack of presence. He is soft-spoken, hardly ever raises his voice, and is a quiet and reserved person. He has never been able to make many friends since a young age, saying himself that he isn't good with people and would rather not interact with them because of this. Despite this, though, he is very concerned about what others think of him, and he doesn't voice his opinions often for fear of how they'll be received. When around people, particularly large numbers and/or those he doesn't know well, his nerves are always on edge because he doesn't want to be noticed. The times in which he has attention focused on him he is very obviously made uncomfortable by it, shown by nervous fiddling and his knack for avoiding eye contact and not being able to maintain it for very long.
Though Kenma tends to be withdrawn, he is very observant, particularly if it has to do with himself as he notices when people are paying attention to him and picks up on when he's the topic of conversation. He is well aware of his own insecurities, anxieties, and weaknesses, and often hears people talk about them when he goes to matches with his team. However, even if he's underestimated, called small and unsteady, and presumed to be the substitute setter, the Nekoma players all agree that he is the backbone of the team, their brain and their heart.
Being sharp and quick-witted, his team looks to him for strategies because he notices things that others might not as quickly or even at all. He can analyze other players and teams and figure out their strengths and weaknesses, finding ways around them, exploiting them, and is said to be able to detect even the tiniest fault in an opposing player. Kenma can tell a lot about another person from simply observing them, whether it has to do with their skills on the court or even the nature of their personality, able to notice things like how aware they are of their surroundings. It is said that because he's not good with people and he's concerned about what others think, he's good at observing them. He comes up with good theories about how another person will act through careful inspection.
Kenma doesn't find many things interesting and doesn't enjoy many activities especially if they make him tired. He is very aloof, and tends to answer questions with very indifferent responses like “not really”, “not particularly”, and “I dont care either way”. He doesn't like getting tired so he'll avoid strenuous activities, discouraging them and avoiding them as much as he possibly can. The only thing that Kenma seems to be very interested in are video games, and most of the time he appears he is either on his phone or playing games on his PSP. Even though he doesn't like getting tired and doesn't have a great liking of volleyball, he still plays and this is because he does things even if he doesn't want to if it's for the sake of his friends.
Due to the fact that he's almost always disinterested in things, when he shows intrigue or excitement it's a big deal. He once said that he was looking forward to playing a match against Karasuno and the statement shocked his entire team, causing an outburst of “Kenma, who has no will to play, is looking forward to a match?” as if it were a miracle. Kuroo has said that he usually only shows a great amount of excitement when he gets his hand on new games, but over the course of the events in canon he has begun to find more enjoyment in volleyball thanks to his relationship with Hinata who has opened his eyes to new aspects of the sport.
It almost seems like it takes a special kind of person to get him to open up, though they mostly just have to be understanding and accepting of how unresponsive he can be at times. Kenma is very confident in his team, his friends, and though he is, for the most part, dispassionate during a conversation about volleyball, the question of whether or not his team is good has him showing a rare instance of intensity when he smiles and says, “I think we're pretty good”. Even though Kenma is a very skilled volleyball player, he is modest and doesn't believe he's anything special, stating as continuation of his discussion of his team that “I told you that I think we're a strong team, but it's not me who's strong. It's everyone together.”
Kenma is a very honest person even if he doesn't express his own opinions much. He can be quite blunt though he's mostly only this way with people he becomes closer to, like his teammates, otherwise he'd barely be talking much in the first place. He will very easily be able to compliment someone or chastise them when he's opened up to them, such as when he expresses how amazing Hinata is when he spikes but how badly he preforms when it comes to everything else, similarly to Lev who he admits is even worse. He also notably doesn't care much for honorifics and respect shown to status when it's unnecessary, not caring if those younger than him don't address him with “proper respect” because it doesn't matter to him and he could never understand why some people used being born a year or two older as an excuse to be overbearing or rude to others.
As shown during his time training with Lev, Kenma can become very discouraged when he tries his best at something and the result is lacklustre. He's prone to giving up if he doesn't feel the desire to keep trying or see the reason to or if he believes nothing will change, finding it easier and less effort when he thinks that improvement is impossible or a far off endeavour. He hardly ever loses his cool but he can be made annoyed when he's bothered by people, made to do things he doesn't want to do, or if he's putting effort into something that doesn't end up going well such as extra practice to help an unskilled teammate who doesn't learn or grinding in a game that he can't seem to beat. He also doesn't like being teased or made embarrassed, and though he doesn't raise his voice his curtness becomes very apparent when he's annoyed. Rarely, he will lose sight of the big picture when he becomes invested in something, losing his skill at being so observant at times because, as Kuroo explains, he tends to lose sight of things when he gets fired up.
Kenma can be very stubborn when he doesn't want to do something, though he'll often times give in if it's for the sake of someone he likes. He has a cheeky side that goes hand-in-hand with his bluntness, can be a bit childish in the fact that he'll argue endlessly about something silly when he's teased and get a friend in petty trouble to pay them back for bothering him in some way like when Lev made him do something tiring, fall, and get a nosebleed. In the face of that, he made it seem like Lev got into a fight with him when the rest of their team asked what happened, getting him in trouble with the others.
Abilities: Kenma's from a sports series and he doesn't any supernatural or special abilities. He is very skilled in volleyball as a setter, however, and boasts extremely high game sense and technique in the sport, making him a very valuable player to have. He is the first character we see in the series perform a “dump shot”, in which he fakes a toss to a teammate and instead drops the ball over the net himself. It's a very risky move to try because it can be easily read, but Kenma executes it flawlessly. He is also able to misdirect the other team's players if they're trying to pick up on what his next move will be because he is so aware of attention on himself, purposefully making it obvious that he'll do one thing (such as toss to the left) when instead he does the opposite (tosses to the right).
His stats in turns of volleyball are listed as so:
Power – 1/5
Jumping – 2/5
Stamina – 2/5
Game Sense – 5/5
Technique – 5/5
Speed – 3/5
Other: Nothing to add!
SAMPLES;
First Person: TDM and Body Heat Meme
Third Person:
There wasn't much that Kenma could say he wanted in life. He was simple in his desires to not want to do anything troublesome or tiring, to be able to do activities he enjoyed even if they were few and far between. Even when he'd first arrived in Holly Heights, he hadn't expressed many complaints, keeping the ones he had to himself rather than voicing them – needlessly, because he figured making a fuss wouldn't zap him back to his world or else everyone would have tried that by now. However, once it had become apparent that he only had the clothes on his back and his cellphone from home, it hadn't taken long for him to want his video games back.
If he wasn't going to be able to escape volleyball and school, then he'd at least want to have something he genuinely enjoyed to balance out those tiresome activities.
He'd overheard, rather briefly, that people were able to get things from home if they asked for them, but what he hadn't heard had been how. Kuroo and Hinata, those here who he was considerably closer to and more comfortable with, hadn't known either, and so Kenma had resolved himself to asking the rest of the small population.
At least the new way his cellphone worked came in handy; he could address everyone without it being too personal.
can anyone tell me how i'd be able to get something back from home?
it's... not an emergency, i guess, but i really want my psp.
Kenma took a moment, frowned slightly at the screen where his own message reflected back at him, and ended up adding, for good measure, a hesitant,
thanks for the help.
In the meantime, he decided to head out and explore the shops for anything that might pique his interest, in case his first plan didn't end up going through, and he could be found peering into the display windows of pretty much any of the buildings.
